Deep Cleaning

Deep cleaning, also known as scaling and root planing, is a non-surgical procedure that removes plaque and tartar from below the gumline to treat and prevent gum disease. At Primera Dental in Lynwood, we offer deep cleaning to help patients with gum inflammation or early periodontal disease restore their gum health.

Signs You May Need a Deep Cleaning

You may benefit from a deep cleaning if you notice red, swollen, or bleeding gums, persistent bad breath, gums that are receding or pulling away from the teeth, loose teeth, or a change in the way your teeth fit together when you bite. During your regular exam, our dentist will measure the depth of the space between your teeth and gums to determine whether a deep cleaning is recommended.

The Deep Cleaning Process

Deep cleaning involves two main steps: scaling, which removes plaque and tartar from the tooth surface and below the gumline, and root planing, which smooths the tooth root to help the gums reattach and heal. Your dentist or hygienist may use local anesthesia to numb the area first, especially if you have significant buildup or sensitive gums.

Treatment Time & Number of Visits

Deep cleaning is often completed over one to two visits, with your mouth divided into sections (usually by quadrant) so treatment stays comfortable. Each visit typically takes about 45 minutes to an hour, depending on how much plaque and tartar buildup needs to be removed.

Recovery & Aftercare

It's normal for your gums to feel tender or slightly sensitive for a few days after a deep cleaning. Rinsing with warm salt water and taking an over-the-counter pain reliever if needed can help. Stick to softer foods for a day or two, and continue gentle brushing and flossing to support healing. Most patients see improved gum health within a few weeks, and we may recommend a follow-up visit to check your progress.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is deep cleaning the same as a regular cleaning?

No. A regular cleaning removes plaque and tartar above the gumline, while a deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) treats plaque and tartar that has built up below the gumline due to gum disease.

Is a deep cleaning painful?

Most patients feel little to no discomfort, especially with local anesthesia if needed. Some tenderness or sensitivity for a few days afterward is normal.

How often will I need a deep cleaning?

This depends on your gum health. Many patients return for maintenance cleanings every three to four months after their initial deep cleaning, rather than the standard six-month interval.

What happens if gum disease is left untreated?

Untreated gum disease can progress and lead to gum recession, bone loss, and eventually tooth loss. Getting a deep cleaning early can help stop the progression and protect your smile.

Does Primera Dental accept Medi-Cal for deep cleaning?

Yes, we accept Medi-Cal for eligible patients, and we also offer Cherry payment plans if you'd like to spread out the cost of treatment.
