TMJ Treatment

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) problems happen when the joints that connect your jawbone to your skull are under stress or pressure. Injuries to the face or teeth, and arthritis, can make the jaw and tooth pain worse. At Primera Dental, we offer TMJ treatment to help ease jaw pain and discomfort. We check your teeth and jaw joints to find which areas need treatment.
What Is Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction?
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) lets you talk and chew comfortably. Overusing this joint can lead to problems known as temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD).
Clenching and grinding your teeth, often caused by stress or anxiety, can lead to problems. These include joint pain, chewing muscle spasms, migraines, and neck pain.
What Are the Symptoms of TMD?
Headaches
Backache
Pain behind the eyes
Pain in the face or throat
Dizziness
Earaches, congestion, and ringing in the ears
Teeth clenching or grinding
Neck stiffness or pain
Jaw numbness or tingling
Sounds in the jaw joints such as clicking, popping, or grating
Tired jaw
Causes of TMD
Misaligned bite
Missing teeth
Jaw clenching or teeth grinding
Poor posture
Injury to your face
Facial muscle weakness
Conditions like arthritis or whiplash
Oral devices like sleep guards or sports guards
What are the TMD treatment options?
After we examine you, we will make a plan to treat the problem and help manage your pain. A temporary change to a softer diet can sometimes relieve tension in the muscles and joints. Soreness and inflammation can be relieved with ice and/or moist heat. Gentle stretching exercises may also help muscles that spasm. Anti-inflammatory pain relievers and muscle relaxants may also help.
Alternative Treatment Options
Severe cases of TMD may need more treatment, such as orthodontics (braces), dental work like bridges, or small procedures inside the joint, like cortisone shots or rinsing the joint (joint lavage). Most people with TMD do not need major surgery. That's why it's best to try gentle, reversible treatments first and give them time to work, since most patients improve with them.
Insurance & Financing Options
Primera Dental accepts Medi-Cal for eligible TMJ treatment, and we also offer Cherry financing so conservative therapies and any recommended dental work are easier to afford.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the first step in treating TMJ?
We'll start with an evaluation of your jaw, bite, and symptoms to determine the likely cause and recommend conservative treatment options first.

How do I know if I have TMJ disorder?
Common signs include jaw clicking or popping, facial pain, headaches, earaches, and difficulty opening or closing your mouth comfortably.
Can a night guard help with TMJ symptoms?
