Root Canal FAQ: Your Questions Answered

Root canals have a reputation for being scary, but modern techniques make the procedure much more comfortable than most people expect. Here are answers to the questions we hear most often from patients at Primera Dental.

What is a root canal, and why would I need one?

A root canal removes infected or inflamed tissue from inside a tooth, usually caused by deep decay, a cracked tooth, or repeated dental procedures. It's performed to relieve pain and save a tooth that would otherwise need to be extracted.

Is a root canal painful?

Thanks to local anesthesia and modern techniques, most patients say a root canal feels similar to getting a routine filling. Any discomfort is usually much less than the toothache that led you to seek treatment in the first place.

How long does root canal treatment take?

Most root canals can be completed in one to two visits, depending on the tooth and severity of infection. Your dentist will let you know what to expect for your specific case.

What happens after a root canal?

After the infected tissue is removed, the tooth is typically restored with a filling or crown to protect it and restore full function. Mild soreness for a few days is normal and can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.

Does Primera Dental accept Medi-Cal for root canals?

Yes, Medi-Cal is accepted for eligible patients, and we also offer Cherry payment plans if you need flexible financing options.

Does Primera Dental serve patients outside Lynwood?

Yes, we welcome patients from Lynwood, South Gate, Compton, Paramount, Downey, Bell, Bell Gardens, Huntington Park, and Cudahy.
